1 year as an #SAPro: Advice I wish I gave myself a year ago

June 30, 2018

A year ago today, June 30, I was on the road from Seattle to Sacramento. With only the belongings I could stuff into my Toyota Corolla, I settled in for a 12 hour drive down the west coast to a new place in a familiar state. By the time I arrived, I was a little … More 1 year as an #SAPro: Advice I wish I gave myself a year ago

I am a student affairs practitioner based in California. I completed my undergraduate work at the University of San Francisco, earning a B.A. in Media Studies. I received my M.Ed. in Student Development Administration from Seattle University. I currently serve as a Resident Director at Santa Clara University. Thoughts and views are my own.

Sundays in San Francisco never do me wrong. It’s somewhat spiritual for me. This time, I had a quiet moment at Dolores, got amazing dim sum at my usual spot on Clement Street, drove to the beach and watched the sun set; just me, a podcast, the sunset, and food. I always leave feeling full in more ways than just one. 🖤
6 months ago today, I had my first day at SCU as a Resident Director. It’s an exciting milestone to celebrate, and as I look at the work I’ve done and the work yet to be done, I am reminded of my Mission. I re-read it recently and felt affirmed that the work I get to be a part of is aligned with the core values I shared at my graduate program’s final portfolio presentation in spring 2017. I am blessed to be able to live out my Mission. This excerpt hit home: “When I center the voices of the marginalized in my practice, I’m radically shifting the way we work to include those for whom higher education was not originally intended. When I interrupt the status quo to propose an alternative that considers a more equitable outcome for everyone, I’m living into my commitment to justice and care for human dignity.” #AMDG #JesuitEducated
I’ll be back in NYC next month 🙌🏼 If you’re in the city while I’m there, let’s make plans 😌 3/22-3/28 | I’ll be tagging people I know in the city I’d be glad to see!
Spring is in progress. 🌱
