Matt’s Story

Not Your Average Marketing Communications Professional

I’ll start with the basics: I am a marketing communications strategist and content producer based in the greater New York City area.

While that line is true, it falls short in capturing the full essence of who I am. I am a creative, the grandson of immigrants, a proud Borícua, an advocate for justice, a former school teacher, a singer, a change-maker. Above all, I’m a person with a story.

And I believe everyone, and every organization, has a story to tell.

Career

My career has included marketing communications strategy in K-12 and higher education, as well as school administration. Telling real stories backed by metrics-driven decisions and data-proven best practices has been a through-line of my career in the education sector. As I search for my next professional role, I’m open to roles in and out of education.

My professional work aligns best with brands, groups, and organizations that share my core values of community, equity, and mission as demonstrated by measurable action and long-term commitments to advancing inclusion, diversity, equity, access, and belonging.

My work in marketing communications is a blend of the strategic and the execution, and I have served in both specialized and generalized roles. Over the course of my 10-year career, I’ve led marketing communications and content strategy for the following kinds of organizations:

  • K-12 education
  • Higher education
  • Non-profit / small business
  • Conference organizations

Some areas of focus in my marketing communications roles include:

  • External marketing communications and public relations
  • Internal and executive communications
  • Visual brand, positioning, and key messaging development
  • Student life communications and divisional branding/positioning
  • Student affairs / student services and retention strategy
  • Recruitment and enrollment communications to reach admissions goals
  • Diversity, equity, & inclusion program direction and messaging
  • Leading small to large marketing communications teams & vendors
  • Advancement, alumni engagement, & fundraising communications to reach organizational giving goals

Education

I wouldn’t be who I am today without my education and the school communities I still call home.

I received my M.Ed. in Student Development Administration from Seattle University’s College of Education and completed my undergraduate studies at the University of San Francisco, earning a B.A. in Media Studies
